A Doll's house by H. Ibsen
Set & Costume Design Laboratory | National Greek Theater 2019-2020

Scenography study on the play | Tutors: E. Manidaki & K. Zamanis

The main scenographic element is a bridge made of human-sized fur balls, which gets gradually built by the actors during the performance. This process symbolizes the couple’s (Nora & Torvald) effort to understand and unite with each other, while the shape and material remind of Christmas ornaments, thus conveying the season when the piece takes place. The last golden ball of the structure, or else the “key” of the bridge, is Nora’s “miracle” and gets destroyed by Torvald just before her departure when he realizes her plot.  This diagram depicts the number of times spaces in the house are mentioned in the text, during the 3 acts of the play.  This analysis highlighted the constant use of the words “house” and “door” and this is how they get heavier in the Loom. Based on this, the proposal has no real or divided spaces, only symbolic corners. On the upper level of the diagram, the thread of time depicts how many times the characters make a reference to the past, present or future. The play is apparently stuck in the past.
