The Singing Space
Multimodal Exercises for Singers
Concept, Design & Workshop Leadership| Conservatory of Amsterdam, 2023
A series of multimodal exercises for singers, involving drawings and movements.
Every exercise initiates with a question that the singers have to answer by visualizing what they feel on the given canvas. Drawings and movements open the discussion around their voices and create room to talk and reflect on the relationship of the voice, the body, and the space, realizing the similarities and differences between singers. These exercises form an educative package for singers to expand their vocal and corporal perception.
"The interpretation of each drawing and internalization of each sensation that I associated with them asked for a lot of creativity and group brainstorming"
Afonso Da Costa, Baritone, student in Classical Voice
“What was I thinking/imagining/feeling bodily, vocally, and how do I react to the space”. Interestingly, I devoured these words so much even after drawing mine. Through the drawing, we visualize the space, both inward to body and outward to the environment, and the direction of sounds that we project"
Wei Wei Li, soprano, student in Classical Voice
"Using the drawings made me realize that I didn’t envision my sound in the space at all. I liked to work on drawings with other singers as we could explore many vocal colors and new possibilities for our singing"
Mathilde Herbaut, soprano, in Classical Voice & Choir Conducting
"I understood that everybody feels differently and, by trying to embody what others feel when they sing, I could effortlessly expand my voice."
Clara Catasus, student in Jazz Voicee
